What is Counselling?

Counselling is a term that is widely used for various different things. I define counselling as follows:

  1. Counselling is a form of therapy, where past issues will be looked at, worked through and released.
  2. The aim of counselling is that the issue that you are bringing to therapy is affecting you less or not at all. Therapy is successful when you have reached this goal within yourself.
  3. When you engage a counsellor you are willing to look at the root cause of your problem with ruthless honesty. You must also be willing to resolve your problem and let it go.

The overall aim of counselling is to provide clients with opportunities to work in self-defined ways, towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way as individuals and as members of a broader society. Counselling may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, improving relationships, developmental issues, promoting and developing personal awareness, working with feelings, thoughts, perceptions and internal or external conflicts.

  • want to overcome personal difficulties and problems through discussion
  • want someone to assist you with examining your own behaviour and perceptions in order to help you lead more effective lives
  • think about how you can become less affected by negative emotions like anger, fear, guilt
  • want support in helping you finding your own solution
  • want to maximise your enjoyment in your personal life

A counsellor does NOT

  • tell you what to do
  • prescribe drugs
  • work with people exhibiting seriously disturbed behaviour
